Fiction and fantasy books are much more than some people credit them to be.
They let your imaginations run. They make you believe. They make you learn good from bad. They are much more.
This post derives inspiration from the much anticipated and recently released final installment of the Batman trilogy. I have not been an ardent a fan of the series – so much that I very recently watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Not to say that I was blown away – but I was stirred.
Even with my limited knowledge of film-making, I can safely comment that Christopher Nolan is a genius. Although TDKR doesn’t have the same forceful and scene-stealing villain as the Joker in its predecessor, it has a largely new cast who, together, make a complete picture for the franchise.
Michael Caine doesn’t get much screen time compared to his role in the last two, but he was still the beating heart of it; with two scenes that were probably the most emotional of the film. Gary Oldman also brings a depth to his role, which has gotten stronger as each film progresses. Anne Hathaway makes for a surprisingly interesting and touching Catwoman and Tom Hardy conveyed both the strength and intelligence that was befitting the villain for this grand finale. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stands out as the honest cop and Marion Cottilard is enchanting, as always. Hans Zimmer delivers a haunting yet goosebump-inducing background score.
The Dark Knight Rises however, was much more than a comic book turned into a motion picture.
To me, it wasn’t about a hero. Not about a city in distress. Not the win of good over evil. And definitely not the flashy Bat-merchandise.
What this franchise of the caped crusader spoke to me about was perseverance. The fact that if you are determined, the stars are just a reach away. But this road to the stars is not cushioned. It is bumpy, trying and often it seems that the only way out is to give up. If one is determined and displays conviction, there is no stopping.
One must question – “Why do we fall?”. One must make the jump, without the rope.
Okay, call me a cynic but I think Batman ought to have anticipated that last twist.
@ Akshay: It's all for the best. And that's what I tell myself too. Just need a little courage.
@ Naween Bhaiya: Now now, cut him some slack. Not like he had a team of supporting superheroes :p
