Schoep.

I had first seen this image a few years ago, and heard this story but thought that it would have probably been one person’s interpretation of a random image of a man playing ball with his dog in a water body.

It turns out to be so much more. 

I don’t know you if you have heard of Schoep and Unger. If you haven’t I will be very happy to narrate it to you. 

John Unger of Bayfield, Wisconsin adopted Schoep, a shepherd mix as a rescue dog nearly 19 years ago.

Thirteen years ago, Schoep was diagnosed with severe arthritis and Unger was told that he may need to be put down soon. Devastated, Unger was determined to help alleviate Schoep’s pain. Knowing that people suffering from arthritis respond well to water therapy, he brought his aging dog to one of their favourite spots – Lake Superior. His idea was to take advantage of the lake’s higher-than-average temperatures this summer and let Schoep feel weightless and relaxed. One of these occasions, this picture which went viral on the internet was taken.

John’s story revolves around his dog, an animal that was abused as a puppy but learned to love – and his loyal companion for 20 years.

Yesterday, on their official Facebook page, John announced that Schoep passed away.

I’ve followed their story and couldn’t help the tears when I read about it.

Over the years, I have met many a people who treat their pets like a part of themselves, others who disdain and ill-treat them. I’ve never had the good fortune of bringing home a new member of the family and living their whole lives by their side.

I guess you have to be really lucky to have what Schoep and Unger had.
